Household Items

Furniture, and a myriad of household items are always needed as new families arrive for resettlement with little more than a single bag each. You can view the list of items we usually provide here.

You can donate new or gently used items by filling out our donation intake form here. Or you can contact Penny Lamhut, MMCC Donation & Move-in Coordinatior, at penny.lamhut@mainemulticulturalcenter.org.

Volunteer

Short-term: Assist with a Move-in

When a new family arrives for resettlement in the Bangor area, Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigrant Services arranges for an apartment rental for them. A group of MMCC Move-in volunteers then brings donated furniture and other household items to the apartment and sets up the bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. These Move-ins require help with lifting and moving furniture and help from folks willing to clean and set up the kitchens as well as make up the beds. Move-ins provide a good opportunity for those who want to be actively involved but have limited or irregular availability. To volunteer for a Move-in fill out the Move-in Volunteer Intake Form here. Or you can contact Penny Lamhut at penny.lamhut@mainemulticulturalcenter.org or (207) 974-3223.

Longer-term: Join a Volunteer Support Team

MMCC’s Volunteer Support Teams assist local immigrants in navigating U.S. life and culture. We strive to help our new neighbors meet basic needs, access essential services, find social supports, and experience a warm welcome to our shared community.

Volunteer Support Team activities are as varied as the needs of those we accompany. A miscellaneous list includes, but is not limited to:

  • Transportation to appointments.
  • Transportation to, and help with, grocery and other shopping.
  • Accompaniment to school meetings.
  • Recreational outings.
  • Assisting with applications for State of Maine ID, driver’s license exams, low-income housing, etc.
  • Help with translation.
  • Serving as a conversational partner to help with English language acquisition.
  • Linking to services related to housing, legal needs, healthcare, domestic violence, immigration, education, after-school programs.

Serve on the Board of Directors

MMCC has an active hands-on Board of Directors with membership representing different cultures and services in the region including education, healthcare, faith, and economic development to name a few.  Nominations to the Board are welcome – we prefer that Board members initially join an MMCC committee before nomination to the Board.

Getting involved is as easy as sending an email to mmccbangor@gmail.com or calling 207-974-3223.
